to&fro is a Netherlands-based studio for vintage homeware and one-of-a-kind jewelry made from vintage beads. Everything is chosen the same way: by form, silhouette, and how well old things sit in modern rooms.

The cover is the Semper Augustus, the white tulip streaked with red that became the most expensive flower of the Dutch tulip mania. The price is written next to it in the old hand: 3000 guilders, more than a canal house. Pages like this came from tulip books, the watercolour catalogues bulb traders showed to buyers, since the flowers themselves were underground most of the year.
This edition reproduces the whole of the Six family's tulip book, the only seventeenth century tulip catalogue to survive complete, with the watercolours Jacob Marrel made for it and essays by Geert Mak and Sam Segal.

A rare vintage silver-plated vase built from two clean geometric shapes. The body is a cone, and it's capped by a wide flat shoulder with a single oval opening cut off-centre. The line where the two meet is sharp, so the vase reads as a piece of sculpture from across the room. It's a substantial piece measuring around 1.5kg.
Recently polished, so the plating has its shine back on the cone.

Condition: good vintage condition with honest wear. The plating has worn through in patches on the top shoulder, around the opening, where the darker base metal shows through. One side of the shoulder has been pushed in slightly, which you can see as a soft dip in the line of the rim. It's on one side only, so it can be turned to the back. The cone is clean and the vase stands level.
A rectangular stainless steel tray in the baroque style, with a rim of scrolls and shells cast in high relief. The well is left plain and mirror bright, so the ornament stays at the edge. Good on a bar cart, a dresser or a table.

Condition: very good vintage condition. Fine surface scratches to the well, visible at an angle, consistent with age.
A tall table lamp with a silver plated column base turned in the shape of a candlestick, with a faceted stem, a broad drip pan halfway up and a stepped, reeded foot. It carries a wide brown linen coolie shade.
At 62 cm it reads as a floor-standing shape shrunk onto a table, so it holds a console, a sideboard or a bedside on its own.

Condition: good vintage condition. The plating has gone in places, with wear around the foot, and some areas have oxidised. The patina is left as it is, and I'm happy to polish it before it ships if you'd rather. The shade is in excellent condition.
